About the Project

IsItSafeToTravel is a free, independently run travel safety platform that provides composite safety scores for 248 countries worldwide. Scores are recomputed every day from 30+ public sources: travel advisories from 25+ governments plus the World Bank, V-Dem Institute, INFORM Risk Index, Global Peace Index, UCDP, ReliefWeb and GDACS.

Mission

Our mission is to make travel safety information transparent, accessible, and data-driven. Every score is backed by publicly verifiable sources, and our methodology is fully documented.

How This Site Works

Every score comes from an automated pipeline that runs once a day: it fetches government travel advisories and public risk indices, recomputes each country's score, and publishes the result — no manual editing of individual scores. What's automated: data collection, normalization and the scoring formula itself. What's reviewed by hand: the scoring methodology, which changes rarely and only after testing — every change is dated and explained in the changelog on our methodology page.

Data & Code

The underlying dataset is open data, licensed CC BY-NC 4.0 — free to reuse for non-commercial purposes, with attribution. The source code of the website and the data pipeline is open source under the MIT license on GitHub: you can read it, reuse it, and propose changes.

Corrections

Spotted a wrong number, a stale advisory, or a bug? Report it through the feedback form or as a GitHub issue. Data corrections land with the next daily update; anything that needs a code or methodology fix is scheduled and noted in the changelog once it ships.

Who Runs This Site

IsItSafeToTravel is an independent project built and maintained by Riccardo Dominici, a developer and data analyst. There is no company or editorial team behind it — one person is responsible for the pipeline, the scoring methodology and this website.
