Frequently Asked Questions
How is the declining safety trend calculated?
We compare each country's current 1-10 score with historical snapshots and rank countries by the largest negative change. Scores are recomputed daily from 40+ public sources, so new conflicts, crime waves or advisory upgrades appear in the trend quickly.
What causes a country's safety score to decline?
Common causes include new or escalating conflict, rising crime, political instability, disease outbreaks and natural disasters. The weighted methodology (conflict 30%, crime 25%, health 20%, governance 15%, environment 10%) means deteriorations in conflict and crime have the largest impact.
Should I cancel a trip to a country with declining safety?
A declining trend is a warning sign, not automatically a reason to cancel: a country can drop and still keep a solid score on the 1-10 scale. Review the absolute score, the affected pillars and current government advisories — all updated daily — before deciding.
